Students. Ya’ gotta love ‘em.
A group of Auburn students have shown some initiative and started a new site called forward-moving.com. (See the contributors here.) They have already reached out to other disciplines and to other schools and countries. Their purpose? The group aims to offer:
- commentary and advice from students, faculty and professionals from around the world from varying levels and areas of PR
- information to help you find PR experience and how to make the most of it
- the opportunity to learn about trends and tools that they don’t teach you in college
- helpful interviews with professionals
- a comprehensive list of suggested reading material including blogs, books and professional publications.
They don’t expect to change the whole world. They just want to help provide a place for new PR professionals to gain a little lift in their shoes. Perhaps, with help, they will make that first step into a successful “after graduation” life a little easier.
One of my favorite parts of the project is this little gem. Now don’t bolt away until you’ve heard it all. Don’t let the first line frighten you.
They are looking for investors. You know … venture capital. No, not your money. They want your mind. See for yourself. Like they say in their blog, “Forward is always very open to advice and assistance from experienced PR professionals - it is vital to our success!”
Knowledge is power. Information is power. The secreting or hoarding of knowledge or information may be an act of tyranny camouflaged as humility.
Robin Morgan
So, perhaps some PR pros can mosey on over to the site and offer support. After all, we have 11 here that have been doing it for almost two years. How about the rest of you? Want to make a difference? You can. Thanks.

Robert, I’m so glad you posted about the new Forward web site. Erin worked so hard on getting this site launched and I know that her hard work will pay off. This site is beneficial to both students and prospective students.
Before coming to Auburn, I didn’t know much about the PR program. I knew I wanted to be in the communications area, but I didn’t know what PR really was or what it had to offer me. This site is great because it is based on the knowledge and experience of public relations students at Auburn University. I’m looking “forward” to being an associate contributor.
This site answers all the questions students have when deciding whether PR is the field for them. I wish this site was up and running when I was a freshman. I think that it will help draw prospective PR students to Auburn and it will boost the reputation of Auburn’s PR program even further. It will also help current students learn about writing cover letters and resumes, putting together a portfolio, job hunting, interviewing, internships and more. This information is what every student needs.
Kudos to Erin!

Doing just a little extra will make them much more marketable and knowledgable once we leave Auburn. Congratulations on a great site! I enjoyed seeing Paull Young on the list of contributors to give the site a little bit of variety. We all pull from the same education base, so I think he will be able to add an appreciated perspective.
The links to other entry PR sites serve students well. Our intro students at Auburn could benefit greatly from exposure to this site and sites like this at an earlier period. Gathering young PR professionals together both a mentor and student role is just one way to give back the support that has been given to us through the years on Marcom and our student blogs.
I think that there is a solid list of contributors and associate contributors that will carry the site with a constant flow of information. Maybe it could be a continuing project that younger PR students behind us could take on. I’d love to know what they will be learning about in the next few years.

This website isn’t only a good thing for freshman, but for seniors as well. I might not need the career decision tips, but cover-letter and resume tips I need. I always get nervous when I have to write those things because I never know if my format is correct or not. But thanks to forward I won’t be as nervous.
Erin has taken the intiative to help the Auburn community once again. In my opinion she is Wonderwoman. She has helped me personally by giving me the opportunity to be an associate contributor. Associate contributor is what I am definetly NO professional. But because of this site it is possible that more people will see my writing.
But the biggest advantage to me is the experience of blogging. I am not a professional writer, but I am learning. This site gives me the opportunity to become a better blogger and writer. Overall this site is going to be a lot of help to many people. Especially those of us contributing to the site.

May I just say bravo Erin! She took precious time (I hear she only sleeps 2 nights a week) and made something that will not only look good on her resume, but will benefit those who come behind her.
I think she did a great job in explaining everything in simple terms. The format is easy to follow and read. Hopefully this will take off and really be a learning community. Showcasing advice from professionals- like Marcom- can be the best possible learning resource. It launches our student blogging onto a bigger market. Tons of Auburn and non-Auburn students can benefit from this.
It will be interesting to see how many professionals actually comment on her site. I know that Robert works hard to get real PR people to speak to us here. This can seem like no big deal to business people, but it means a lot to us students. I mean how else can we make our 4 post minimum?

I have to say that this site has been a great opportunity for students. In the weeks working toward the deadline there was a bit of “are we going to make it in time?” Of course with Erin’s determination and encouragement we were able to launch our site with minimal problems.
This site is great for young PR professionals and undergraduates as well. Knowing what I do now, I wish I had a resource like this to help me out. Auburn University is a great program, but there is no time to teach students real life applications of the information we learn. This site gives PR professionals a chance to give students a heads-up for the real business world.
This site is especially helpful for me. Being an associate contributor gives me the opportunity to enhance my blogging skills. Not only in class, but also with the media I read I see that blogging is becoming quite the communication tool. If I can be apart of such a great idea as Forward-moving that not only helps young PR professionals and undergraduates, and help my own communication skills then why not? Forward-moving is a great site with a great concept and I urge all students to check it out.

I would just like to join in with all of the rest of Auburn’s pr students and give my praise to this site. It is going to be a very useful tool for anyone going into the field of pr, whether they are a freshman just getting started or a senior about to be on their way. It includes a lot of information about the field of public relations and what it is all about so that younger students that may be unsure about what they want to do can make an educated decision. But it also includes information about how to make a proper resume and cover letter. This information is very important to the older students and seniors that are about to graduate and begin the difficult job hunt. This is a wonderful addition to the information that the university will provide about the public relations major. Thank you to all those of you that have contributed! This is going to be great!

Yes Robert! Thanks for posting this!!! I had no idea this was even going on and I see all of these people in class every day! I reviewed site and I am quite impressed. Erin Caldwell at once again, what can’t the girl do? And once again, great pr coming from Auburn University. I am so proud to be in this field here, I know that when I give my resume out and employers see my school, they will know what we have done. Thanks Erin and all of the other contributors!
PS. Cute pics and bios all of you!

One word comes to mind after looking over all the different aspects and opportunities on this site…WOW. The site looks great, and I feel it is going to be a huge success. It is a pleasure to be able to look on the contributors list and know that these people are my classmates. They are the people I brush shoulders with in the hallway and get to gain knowledge from in group projects.
I think this site is going to be a huge benefit to students who are looking into Public Relations as a major choice. I know when I first decided to declare Public Relations as my major my mom asked over and over “well, what is it you are going to do with this degree?” And my response was always “I don’t know,” and the truth is I didn’t know. I didn’t know all the opportunities Public Relations has to offer. I didn’t know the variety of job ventures that Public Relations entails. I feel though now as a senior that I am much more enlightened. I think that having this site available for students entering Public Relations will help them answer that questions of “what are you going to do with this degree” more effectively than “I don’t know.”
I didn’t even know that my classmates were working on this site, and it was a pleasant surprise to find myself browsing through all the different links. So kudos to all you guys and girls who are involved with this site. I know it will be a huge success, and help answer many unanswered questions we, as well as freshman, have about Public Relations. So, GOod luck to all of you!!

Just another example of the creativity and imagination that comes from Auburn University’s public relations program. I’ve said it before, but I am more than happy to say it again. We have something extremely special brewing here at in our program. We have a talented faculty who inspires us to think of new projects and tackle them, and we have the knowledge to go out there and make it happen.
Erin again is an amazing example of what the public relations program is like here at Auburn. And after looking at the site, I feel that more Auburn students are going to know about our program after viewing this site. It really helps get the word out about public relations, and hopefully, it will help the rest of us when we get that inevitable question of, “So what is public relations anyway?” After reading this site and getting our questions answered, we should be able to fire back with a rapid and intelligent response. And through this website, we can all read and learn about different aspects of public relations and different experiences. I didn’t realize the depth of the field until I reached our case studies class. Now, even those beginner public relations students will have a place to go to learn more about what they are getting into.
Good job, and I look forward to hearing more from you.

First off, let me just say that I admire Erin’s ability to make a website like Forward. I think the idea behind the website is great and will be very beneficial to up and coming PR practitioners as well as people who are already in the PR field. Another reason why I admire Erin’s ability to make this website is because I dont know how she had the time being a senior in PR about to graduate. I am currently taking my last PR classes, as well as other classes, and they seem to be taking over my life. Not that I’m not learning a lot from them, I just have no time to do anything else and seeing one of my peers having the time to establish such a useful sight is encouraging. I guess Erin obviously has better time mangagement than I do, which would be something I need advice on.
Coming from someone who was clueless on what the main idea of PR was before I enrolled in my main classes I think that this website is going to help out not only current students but also prospective students. I think that if I knew of this website before I applied for the major I would have definitly not have been as clueless and would have been more excited to get into the field of PR. Now, since I’m about to graduate, any advice I can get whether it comes from PR professionals or even my peers I take into consideration and appreciate it greatly.
Again, good job Erin not only on the website but also on your time management skills.

I think that this website is a great idea. I wish that I could have had something like this when I was a freshman. I think it would have made me feel more prepared coming into the PR major. I do think that young PR students can benefit from talking to upperclassmen. However, students aren’t always in a position to be able to this regularly. This website allows for that. I just hope that students realize this and take advantage of it. I would hate to see Erin and the others’ hard work go to waste.
I think the website will be beneficial to seniors as well. I have visited the site several times and I plan to continue to do so. I am certainly not an expert in the PR field and I will take all the help I can get. Plus, I think that other students are a great resource to learn from. Thanks to Erin for taking the time to do this. I think that we will all benefit from it.

I am always amazed to see Auburn students come up with these excellent ideas. It really makes me feel proud to be a part of this university and a part of such a great PR program. I do admire Erin for coming up with this site. It gives all of us PR majors more help with our profession and jobs, and anything that will give me an extra boost, I am all for! I also admire Erin’s ability to for time management. It must be hard to balance so many things all at once. Most of the time, I feel like I’m running around this campus like a chicken with my head cut off. To be able to be on the verge of graduation and start up something that must be time-consuming is in my opinion amazing! I am certain this web site will help answer some of my questions about the PR world. Keep up the good work Erin!

Forward moving is a great site for current and prospective Auburn students. As part of any career, you never stop learning. Forward-moving provides a great resource site for anyone in any field of public relations to voice advice or opinions, or to receive help or advice from some of their peers.
Blogging is only beginning to touch the surface of the public relations world, and it will only continue to become a necessity for PR practitioners. From the experiences I have gained from Robert’s classes in blogging, I feel like I have a “one-up” on many of the other students (in different schools) who are preparing to graduate in PR this semester. From what I have heard, Auburn University is only one of a couple of schools who are teaching the importance of blogging to students. It is imperative that Robert and classes within Auburn’s PR department continue teach the value and significance of blogging and what it can do for one’s career.
I commend all those who have taken the initiative to start the forward-moving site. This will be extremely resourceful for all of us in the public relations program and for those prospective students. I hope to see the site continue to gain contributors and to be a lasting success!
