New Social Media Book and Marcomblog Redesign

Note: As you’ve likely noticed, the Marcomblog has a new design. With the upgrade to the latest version of WordPress, I have added podcasting (Podpress), widgets (Automattic), and more to the admin areas. In honor of our new podcasting ability, I’ve chosen to cross-post an interview with Ted Demopoulos. I encourage our contributors to start taking advantage of our podcasting ability, too. Let us hear what you think of the new look and add-ons.

Blogging is a difficult concept for some people to embrace. Often, the best way to learn how you might be able to use a blog for your own benefit is to hear how others use it.

Real-Life Advice from 101 People who Successfully Leverage the Power of the Blogosphere

This is where Ted Demopoulos comes into your life. Ted has written a book - What No One Ever Tells You About Blogging and Podcasting: Real-Life Advice from 101 People who Successfully Leverage the Power of the Blogosphere. (Amazon)

What No One Ever Tells You About Blogging and PodcastingTed agreed to sit for an interview and we discussed many of the individuals he interviewed. He has stories from around the world. Big names and relative unknowns. But, they have all found positive (even profitable) uses for blogs and podcasts in their personal and professional lives. The book includes stories from “Seth Godin, Large John, Guy Kawasaki, surferdude/deep thinker Dave Kesel, Dave Taylor, Andre the Siberian Splogger and reindeer breeder, and even my (Ted’s) favorite, ANONYMOUS!” We discussed several of these people in our interview.

I have edited this down from a one hour conversation. It now runs 21:06 (7mb download), and I hope you will enjoy it.

Full disclosure: I am in the book. Ted kindly included our discussion which is condensed down to the quite simple section - It’s All an Experiment. Thank you, Ted. I’m grateful and honored you chose to include our interview.

Despite my good fortune to be in the book, I’m still grateful for the opportunity to read it. Stories like those Ted has compiled will serve me, and you, well. Check out the book at Amazon. It was released last week.

Here is the interview.

I love the redesign! Looks great Robert!

Thank you, Elizabeth. I can always count on you! EWood Good! :)

I agree with Ewood that I also love the redesign! I definitely agree that blogging can be a difficult concept to embrace, and I am also willing to hear how others have used blogs for their own benefit. Since I do blog every week, it would be nice to know how blogging could be beneficial to me. I wouldn’t mind hearing more about Ted Demopoulus’s book What no one ever tells you about blogging and podcasting. I am always interested to know how people become profitable from blogging. I think that is so neat that Ted mentioned you in his book, and I am not surprised because you are definitely someone who has successfully leveraged the power of the blogosphere.

Robert, the redsign looks great. At first I was quite confused as to what happened with our beloved MarcomBlog, but as I read your post I realized I was at the right place.

The redesign looks clean and professional, with lots of white space. I also like the drop-cap letters similar to “The Loveliest Village.” The podcast feature will be beneficial because we will probably be able to see (and hear) a wider variety of posts on the blog.

As far as your conversation with Demopoulos, I found his book to be seem so helpful that I actually went to Amazon and purchased it. The perspective on bloggers’ success stories is definitly helpful when comprehending how the blogosphere can benefit organizations, and in this case individuals. I am especially interested in the commenting from the ANONYMOUS blogger.

As Demopoulos said in the podcast, I find it interesting that he included stories from people who will probably never blog, but get a lot of value from the tool.

The story about the salesman who uses blogs to find out information about his potential clients is interesting because it shows how blogging can help someone who may not be blog savvy, but uses the tool for other reasons. In his case, gaining interest with his clients.

In all, the site looks great and I will be looking forward to podcasted posts.

The new design looks great. Demopoulos’ book sounds like a great tool for all of us new bloggers out there. How it has benefitted others and how it may benefit us. It is always great to hear how blogging can help in the real world.

Robert, I love the new look of Marcom — very professional. I like the globes. And as for Ted Demopoulos’ book, I’m ordering it right now so I can read about you.

Hi Robert.

It’s 3:30 a.m. I’m sitting at my computer studying for a test when I decide to check out Marcom. Needless to say, I was surprised. I do like the new look of the site even though I am a bit frightened by change.

I ordered the book too. Aren’t you proud? At $12.95, it was a steal. This guy seems very interesting. I listened to the podcast too:) How cool would it be if Ted visited our class?!

The Ted Rap sounds wierd, but oh well.

I thought it was cool how he talked to people who don’t blog as well. It was pretty smart how he noticed there are people who read blogs and get value from them even though they don’t blog themselves. I’m going to head over to Ted’s site right now and check out his blog.

Also, he has successfully persuaded me to never visit Siberia.

Love the new look Robert! I thought I had gone to the wrong site for a second. I am defintely planning on picking up the book next time I’m at the bookstore I think it will be a great tool with lots of good info! I am especially going to read it if it mentions you!

Robert,
The site looks great. I like the face-lift.

I enjoyed listening to your interview with Ted. He was so smart to write this book. There’s so much going on in the blog world today, and so many people are unaware of it. I like the fact that he interviewed people all over the world. The interview definitely brought up issues I wasn’t aware of, for example security issues. Use pass phrases instead of passwords…who knew?

And another thing- he interviewed almost 300 people. He chose to use your interview! Don’t be so modest, Robert. You’re kind of a big deal!
See you in class,
Sarah

I love the new page, although I thought I’d gone to the wrong site for about ten minutes and typed in as many different versions of marcomblog.com that I could think of. Typical Dallas….Anyways I think I will make this book my next purchase. I think I can use all the help I can get! Also, I’m pretty excited that in a few years when you’re famous for your love of blogging and being an important topic in a published book that I can say “I knew you when…”

Robert,

Thanks, and please don’t be so modest! You gave some very needed open minded prospective. Too many of us are so involved in blogging and podcasting that we sometimes lose perspective. It IS all just an experiment at this point! (although an awefully interesting one generating concrete benefits for many). And thanks for the interview too.

Thanks to everyone for your comments, and Wade, Siberia is a veeeery big place. Imagine a New Yorker saying they never want to go south of the Mason-Dixie line, and that includes all of Central and South America :) Seriously though, I was primarily in a college town in Siberia (Khanty-Mansisyk), not too dissimilar from the college town I live in, Durham NH. Ohh, it was 90 degrees colder though! No exaggeration.

Hey Robert,
Ted is right, you are way too modest. You’re my blogging hero! But on a more serious note, you truly are one of the great pioneers of blogging, and the fact that you share this wealth of knowledge with us students, is well, very nobel of you. So thanks, even though I complain about it a lot!

I’m interested to read Ted’s book because, I think it will give me a better understanding of how people have become successful through blogging. It’s also a great oppurtunity to discover how other practitioners, PR and non-PR alike have used blogging to their advantage.

I must admit I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, but when I have an open 21 minutes to do so, I will. If I didn’t have so many stories to write, blogs to post, final projects to complete, I might have more time. Just kidding Robert, I know you’re making my life difficult now so I will benefit in the future.

By the way the new site looks great! Yay for WordPress!

Wow! That was a shock! I was expecting to see good ‘ole Marcom blog with all its bold colors and contributor lists on the right side. You do so enjoy confusing us, don’t you Robert? Well, I will join everyone else in complimenting the new look. The colors are much more pleasing and I like how it has a similar feel as loveliestvillage. The students that follow me in this class are really going to hate me for this, but I don’t think it would be a bad idea to require your students to read this book at the beginning of the semester before they begin blogging. When I first began blogging in your class a hundred years ago (I might be exaggerating a bit) I thought it was really stupid. I’m sure many of your new little bloggers feel the same way, because in the beginning we never really understand the value of such things. This book will really lay things out for them and help them to understand that even non-bloggers benefit from blogging. And it is something that the world is becoming a part of, not just our contributors and us. Plus, it will score you instant popularity points with your new students because you are in a book! Just something you should think about.

Robert, the new marcom sucks! I’m just kidding. It threw me off. I thought it had been bought and redeveloped. Seriously, to me, it seems a bit plain, but who am I to judge? And you don’t realize what impact you have on us and the world. Quit being such a goofball and accept your innovative stance. A wise man once told me…ah forget it, i don’t listen to wise people, they’re too smart.

I like the new look, a little more simple and straight forward. I suppose that I will get this book, or steal it, or buy a bootleg copy on the black market (Just Kidding, Robert). The book is a good idea for people in my position who are still getting used to blogging. On a side note, I did used to blog on xanga.com. It was a very simple site but never really picked up. Overall, great looking new site and I hope it continues to grow.

Although the new look threw me off at first, I like it a lot! This book sound really interesting. Blogging is definitely a concept that is difficult to grasp at first. When I first found out about blogging, it was on Myspace. To me, blogging was simply more of an online journal. Just lots of people sharing random thoughts and their day-to-day lives.
Blogging as a business tool is a completely different concept. I think this book will be helpful to those who want a little more information about the concept of blogging.

Wow Robert, love the new design of Marcom blog. It is more pleasing to the eye and much more organized. I agree with Danielle. I didn’t exactly understand the point of blogging, but now that I have worked with it and learned a little more about it, I see that it is a valuable resource for businesses.

I agree that the best way to learn about blogging and how it might be useful to you is to see how other people have used it. A book on bloggin from this angle should be extremely helpful to many companies and organizations that are still a little confused with the whole concept.

Oh, and the new design looks great. I was a little confused at first, but now I get it! See ya soon Robert!!!

Robert, I love the new design! At first I was confused as to where I was, but I figured it out. :) I am very impressed with the podcasting on the site!!

I definitely an interested in this book! I even just went online to Amazon and bought it as I sit here in lab with you. Blogging and podcasting is still a part of the social media world that many do not know everything about at all. I am glad of the blogging and podcasting knowledge I have, which all comes from Robert. It is definitely only real-life experiences that can teach others about this social media. I am very excited about reading the book and learning more about it from others’ experiences. Thanks to Demopoulos for compiling all of this information for others to learn from. Without people like him, valuable knowledge on social media would continue to be a mystery.

The interview with Ted Demopoulos was a great add on to the story. It was nice having the option to listen to the author’s opinions on the book. Even though I was not able to listen to the entire condensed interview, it is great having it on blogs such as this one- where there is merchandise you can purchase. It can aid in persuaded the individual to buy the product- such as it did with me! Can’t wait to receive the book. I will let you know what I think about it Robert! Can’t wait to read the 2 pages on you!! :)

I had a chance to listen to the podcast about the new book and I think it will be a very interesting book. I think it is important that you get different ideas from many different people when you are learning how to do things. Since blogging is still fairly new it will be beneficial to go through and read how many different people are using blogging to promote their business, product, or just their ideas. I look foward to reading the book.

This looks great Robert, I am glad to be a part of the team. Macomblog is a great resource.

Kristina Wilburn

The new site looks great, Robert. No wonder you are a “contender.” It’s great you are mentioned in Ted’s book about blogging and podcasting- that’s huge. It feels great to be an Auburn pr student right now. Thanks

I have to agree with everyone else, the new design looks great. Lots of whitespace :) I think the book is a good idea for people who are still getting used to blogging and don’t quite understand it yet. People need to grasp the idea of how much power blogging has. It’s a great tool that can be used by many businesses and they have no idea.
It’s also really cool how Ted mentioned you, you deserve some recognition. Even if you don’t think so, we do!

Ted is also the co-author of “Blogging for Business” with Shel Holtz which is an endorsement in and of itself, considering Shel’s considerable standing in the business blogging and podcasting world.
