Something New This Spring :: Student Digital Resumes and Portfolios Online

As Dee related in his previous post, see below, there are other positive things to do online and other ways to explore online for public relations practices. The students involved in Marcomblog at Auburn University have been preparing their final projects for their Style and Design class. Always wanting to help promote them to you in the public relations world, I’m cross-posting this from my blog.

Spring semester brought something new for the PR Style and Design class. They published their digital resumes and portfolios online.

The students completed their final projects this week. The links below lead to their digital resumes and portfolios.

In the past, some students took it upon themselves to do this. Each semester, more and more chose that path. So, I thought about having all the students stake their place online with a resume.

I think this is a positive opportunity. Already, some of the students have received positive feedback from those they’ve applied to for internships and jobs.

A diverse group, these students are either graduating, heading out to do their internships or about to search for internships/jobs. So, if you’re interested in hiring … check these links out now.

We’ve been doing a final project like this for years. But, this is the first time I’ve required the students to obtain a domain and publish their final projects online.

Here are the results …

I’m proud of them all. Hey, this was new and they took to the challenge. I’ll admit that it was hard for a group that, for the most part, come into the class with varying levels of experience with all of this software. Our goal is to provide them with an overview of the software so that they may be knowledgeable when serving the interests of their clients in the future.

Here is a sampling of the software programs the students explored. Katherine Liles shared a list of the software titles on her resume.

  • Adobe Indesign - A graphic design layout page.
  • Adobe Photoshop - A professional image editing and graphics creation program.
  • SnagIt - A program that allows you to capture any images, text, or video on your screen.
  • Macromedia Dreamweaver - A program that provides users with a graphical interface for the creation of web pages. This type of program is commonly referred to as a “HTML editor”.
  • Macromedia Flash - A program that allows you to integrate video, text, graphics and audio into interactive web sites.
  • Audacity - An audio recording and editing program.

There are actually other software packages involved in the project. Some of those are Skype, HotRecorder and Color Cop.

Also, the students utilized templates available from the Open Source Web Design Project (oswd.org).

To put it simply, Open Source Web Design is a collection of web designs submitted by the community that anyone can download free of charge!

Students edit and modify the themes to suit their project needs. This is one way to develop an understanding of HTML and CSS. I don’t intend for the students to leave as software and Web developers, as that isn’t realistic. Also, they don’t need to be developers. They do need to leave with a working understanding of the processes, and this project serves that purpose.

Check them out and let me know what you think.

Robert!
I was just glancing over Marcom Blog reminiscing over the old days and just now saw this post. I apologize that I did not see it earlier.. I’m guessing that we were all glad we were done with our final projects. :)

Thank you so much for what you said about us and our final projects! That means a lot to me. Thanks for “making”- I’m kidding- I mean getting us to complete out these digital portfolios. It is the best thing I have done all throughout my college career. It definitely is the work I am the most proud of and I’m sure I will be for a long time.

Thanks again for everything! You’re the best teacher. See you soon..and don’t think I’m gone for good- I will still be calling and e-mailing with questions when I’m out in the “real world.”

Hi all,

I’ve just discovered the brilliance of your site this week, been checking it out all the way from Australia. I’m in my final year of University and it’s time to start putting together our professional portfolios in order to get those grad jobs. I’m inspired by the personal websites I see above, infact i’m going to try and teach myself how to use Dreamweaver etc to create one. What a fantastic way to brand yourself, makes the old resume on paper seem prehistoric.

Will be sure to spread the word about your site to fellow PR students over here.

Robert,

I am excited to make my digital resume and portfolio. I feel that we, as AU pr majors, have a real advantage over pr students from other schools. Two of my friends who go to Tennessee have basically have had a similar curriculum except for this class. I believe that knowing how to create these media outlets will really make me stand out when I begin to look for a job. So thank you for making us do this.

Despite my nerves, I’m really looking forward to what I’ll be learning in style and design. I’m not the most tech savvy person around, but I think that in the upcoming years online work will play an increasing role in the jobs that practitinoners perform. In the age of the internet, it’s exciting to know that I’m learning about things like social media which are on the cutting edge of our field. I really appreciate the opportunity to get a leg up on our future competition in the job market.

I agree with Josh’s thought that online work will play a vital role in future jobs. Just by looking through some of these former Style and Design students’ digital portfolios, I can already see how the skills learned in this class will help me in my career. I feel like most classes teach us important skills needed to be good pr practitioners, but it is sometimes hard to see how these skills will benefit us in the long run. I am eager to fine tune my social media skills and have a better understanding of the various software programs we will be using throughout the semester.

Learning to make an online resume and portfolio can be exciting. However, it can also be frustrating. The frustration aspect develops in many ways such as placing financial strain on a student to purchase the needed material to create these projects, and learning the steps to complete the projects without a lot of practice.

I understand that the professor is available to help you during a time of need, but when you begin to explore creating these projects on you own, you may experience the feeling of being like a “fish out of water.”

I also believe that if cameras are provided for classes such as photojournalism, then the items needed for the style and design class should be invested in as well.

Don’t get me wrong; I love learning new techniques. However, the class that helps teach the technique should be an option and not a force.

I am currently taking Style and Design this semster at Auburn University. This class challenges me everyday. I am inspired to not only become comfortable and acquainted with the various programs and projects but excell in them. I know that my hard work in this class will pay off and benefit me in the future.

PR is headed towards a very technological based future, and as a future PR practioner understanding and acquiring these skills will be beneficial wherever I go. Beyond this it is really nice to walk away from this class with something tangible to show future employers.

Auburn University has taken its PR program to the next level and allowed us to learn all the aspects written and social media of PR. I feel that it gives us an advantage over alot of other students. I have taken away more from this class than any other in my college career.

This class we are in, Style and Design, is crucial to understanding the world we live in today. The times are certaintly changing, with the Web being the biggest factor in that change. Yes, there is a lot of new information to obtain, but it is so exciting to be a part of the generation that are some of the first to utilize these new techniques. What perfect timing to still be in school, learning all these new things, so that I won’t be in the dark when I start working.

To be honest, it has taken me a while to realize the benefits in social media. I felt like I had been told that social media is the way to go, but I never really understood why (I promise this is nothing against Robert…it was just hard for me to adjust to it and, in turn, know why it’s crucial).

The reason i now believe it’s so important is not only because it’s a great way to network. But also, social media is effective in including an audience to see what their needs are, and then adjusting your message to appeal to them. It’s also one of the most efficient ways to get news out quickly.

All this to say that this class is so benefical in preparing me for all this. I now see the point in all the video postings, blogging, interacting with other bloggers and designing digital portfolios and resumes. I am still not sold on the whole Twitter thing, but maybe that will be the next thing to grow on me!

I think the most exciting part about Style and Design is the digital resume. It will be very useful when it comes to finding an internship/job. I also like the idea of having my own website. I’m basically marketing myself to anyone who wants to look.

A digital resume not only shows all of your acheivements and activities, but also shows that you can actually make a website. Technology is such a huge part of the world we live and our industry-I think companies/future employers like to see that you have the capabilities to build websites, etc.

So far I have had fun building my digital resume (but I sure do have a long way to go). I’m excited to see what my final website will look like at the end of the semester. I know it will be a lot of work, but I really do think it will pay off in the future.

My first reaction to the idea of creating a digital portfolio and resume was one of shear fright. Now that I’ve been immersed in this new culture of bitmaps, wikis and web hosting, it’s becoming clearer exactly why we have been chosen to learn social media. Public Relations will always have its press releases, but in the future, more things such as video blogs and social media releases will be surfacing.

I’m so thankful for my education, but until I heard from a former student about how important it is to be ahead of the curve, I didn’t appreciate learning things like Photoshop and InDesign. I hope that the things that I learn will show in my digital portfolio and resume.

At this point in the semester we are approaching completion of our final projects the online digital resume. Some students are about ready to pull their hair out while others are already done and lending a helping hand. What I will say is this we all know the end result will lead to nothing but success. Hard work never goes unnoticed and creating the digital resumes was no easy task.

I said I was going to stay positive throughout this whole experience and not break the one rule we have and not CRY. Thus far I haven’t and don’t plan on it. My digital resume may not be the fanciest or the most creative, but it will show that I have acquired the knowledge and I know what I’m doing. Thanks Robert.

This project has been a lot of work so far and there’s much more to be done before it’s finished. However, the work has been surprisingly not that bad. I’m really excited about what’s coming out, and I know I’ll use this a lot in the months(and probably years) after my graduation. It’s also good to know that we are getting an advantage over other pr majors who aren’t doing this kind of work in their classes. Thanks Robert.

This information was really helpful. I can’t wait for more of your postings. Thank you so much
