In case folks haven’t seen it, brandchannel.com recently announced the 2004 Readers’ Choice Award winners. These annual awards are designed to recognize the brands that have the most impact on our lives each year. Impact can be either positive or negative, and the awards do not attempt to quantify the financial value of the brands.
Not surprising, Apple ranked as the brand with the most global impact. However, what’s intriguing is that Al Jazeera is listed as number five. Brandchannel.com elaborated on this ranking by saying, “Though suffering difficulties such as banned reporters, advertising boycotts, and charges of bias (arguably stemming from those who are themselves biased toward European and American interests), Al Jazeera is viewed as relatively independent within its region and is increasingly gaining mainstream credibility beyond its borders.”
Results are based on responses from 1,984 brandchannel.com readers from 75 countries, who voted online between November and December 2004.
The full list of global winners are:
1. Apple
2. Google
3. IKEA
4. Starbucks
5. Al Jazeera
6. Mini
7. Coca Cola
8. Virgin
9. ebay
10. Nokia
I’d encourage everyone to take a look at the full article, since it provides some additional rankings based on region, etc. I tried pretty hard to pick apart the reasoning behind the rankings but overall, I agree with them…EXCEPT, I wonder how Coca Cola made the list and not McDonald’s. Wasn’t 2004 a pretty notable year for Mickey D’s?
In any case, if you’re interested, CNN also ran a story on it, available here.
